Earth Day on Netflix: 8 Environmentally Friendly Documentaries You’ll Love

Today, Saturday 22nd April is Earth Day. It’s a day where we look a little bit more at how we treat the environment and the impact it has on the world around us. In particular, this year it’s a prominent topic, with climate change denial being part of the current American administration. While this terrifies me, as it will inevitably lead to years of damaging policies ahead, I am thankful for the tireless work of the scientists who are working to save our planet.

Over on Netflix, they’ve got a variety of documentaries which should definitely open up your eyes to what is going on with this planet of ours. They’ll open your mind, get you thinking and hopefully make a change in what you do. These are just a few of the ones to look out for this Earth Day.

8 Eye Opening Documentaries on Netflix this Earth Day

A Plastic Ocean

A Plastic Ocean is an adventure documentary shot on more than 20 locations over the past 4 years. Explorers Craig Leeson and Tanya Streeter and a team of international scientists reveal the causes and consequences of plastic pollution and share solutions

Mission Blue

This documentary follows Oceanographer Sylvia Earle’s campaign to save the world’s oceans from threats such as overfishing and toxic waste.

Chasing Ice

James Balog, an acclaimed environmental photographer, was once a sceptic about climate change and a cynic about the nature of academic research. But through his Extreme Ice Survey, he discovers undeniable evidence of our changing planet. In Chasing Ice, Balog deploys revolutionary time-lapse cameras to capture a multi-year record of the world’s changing glaciers. His hauntingly beautiful videos compress years into seconds and capture ancient mountains of ice in motion as they disappear at a breath-taking rate.   Traveling with a team of young adventurers across the brutal Arctic, Balog risks his career and his wellbeing in pursuit of the biggest story facing humanity. As the debate polarizes America, and the intensity of natural disasters ramps up globally, Chasing Ice depicts a heroic photojournalist on a mission to deliver fragile hope to our carbon- powered planet.

Cowspiracy

COWSPIRACY: The Sustainability Secret is a ground-breaking feature-length environmental documentary following an intrepid filmmaker as he uncovers the most destructive industry facing the planet today, and investigates why the world’s leading environmental organizations are too afraid to talk about it. A definite eye opener for me!

Food Choices

This new ground-breaking documentary explores the impact that food choices have on people’s health, the health of our planet and on the lives of other living species. It also discusses several misconceptions about food and diet, which I found really interesting.

Antarctic Edge: 70° South

Antarctic Edge: 70° South is a thrilling journey to the bottom of the Earth alongside a team of dedicated scientists. In the wake of devastating climate events like Superstorm Sandy and Hurricane Katrina, oceanographer Oscar Schofield teams up with a group of world-class researchers in a race to understand climate change in the fastest winter-warming place on earth: the West Antarctic Peninsula. For more than 20 years, these scientists have dedicated their lives to studying the Peninsula’s rapid change as part of the National Science Foundation’s Long-Term Ecological Research Project.
