Oh, it’s that time of year again, where the shops are filled with roses and distressed looking men. There are cards to tell everyone you love them, from your husband, wife, lover, mistress, even your cat if you’re so inclined. Couples will be romancing to dinners by candlelight, men will endure 50 Shades of Torture, yes it’s Valentines Day. But, oh wait, you’re parents. And it’s midweek. Even your babysitter has plans… Time for a Plan B.
Note: This all depends on child being compliant. Child compliance in going to sleep at a reasonable hour is probably not to be expected and will result in less likely chance of success, and ahem, shenanigans.
This one all really depends on the amount of time you have at your disposal. Tonight is an easy prep dinner for the kids, no faffing about with stuff they won’t eat, nutrition is tomorrow’s problem.
For those not out in child-free restaurants, supermarket chain stores have the answer (and most of it includes wine).
Tesco have added some romantically themed desserts to their Valentines Day Finest Meal Deal, which includes one main (Beef in Chianti, Lasagne, Woodfired Carbonara Pizza, Chicken with Lemon and Herb Butter, and many more), and three of any of their soups, sides and desserts. I’m a big fan of this deal as an easy nice just-the-two-of-us-staying-in-date-night meal. For dessert, you have a choice of Chocolate Brownie Hearts, or Strawberry and Prosecco desserts. It’s all for €10 too, which is an absolute bargain. Speaking of Prosecco, they’ve also got a range of deals on their wines and bubblies to add a little fizz to your night in!
M&S Valentines Day deal is a little more pricey BUT it does include the wine – for €25 you get a starter, main course, side dish, dessert, cava, wine or non alcoholic beverage and a box of chocolates. Their selection of foods is also a lot larger, and has options for vegetarians and meat eaters alike. I’m quite intrigued by the starter of Smoked salmon show starter, and the mussels in white wine, not to mention the mains which include a variety of steaks, slow cooked duck and Gastropub goats cheese en croute. I am, admittedly, a dessert woman, so I have a feeling the most difficult part will be choosing which of their large selection to go for – the raspberry and prosecco spheres, or the heart shaped strawberry punnet, or, most likely, the melt in the middle chocolate puddings. This is definitely a The-Kids-Are-In-Bed-I’m-Not-Sharing dinner. Ahem.
If you’re staying in, Netflix has a variety of things to get you in the mood for love this Valentines Day.
The smash hit from Irish actress Saoirse Ronan is a beautiful romance story, but also all about relationships between women as well – not your usual schmaltzy watch.
Before We Go
Chris Evans does romance instead of Superhero, and it works.
Before We Go takes place in a short time frame. Evans’ trumpeting busker meets and falls in love with a stranded and unhappily married Alice Eve over the course of a night in New York. Sounds rather like Once, no?
About Last Night
A remake of the Brat Pack film of the same name, About Last Night substitutes the likes of Demi Moore and Rob Lowe for Regina Hall and Kevin Hart to much more satisfying effect. It’s funny and romantic – a rare combination to get right – so a great pick for this Valentine’s Day.
Michael Bolton’s Big Sexy Valentine’s Day Special
Need I say more?
The folks at CBeebies have also added some extra love into tonight’s Bedtime Story, which may interest some of the Mammies…
Hopefully between those, a nice midweek date night can be had. And if nothing else, you’re sure to have a gorgeous handmade card (at least one) professing undying love from at least one of the people in your house this year. Isn’t parenting grand?
BadMammy is over on Facebook.
